RECOVERY CORPS GRANT EXTENDS SUMMER PROGRAMS TO FILL THE GAP UNTIL SCHOOL OPENS

NEW ORLEANS, La. (August 16, 2006) – One hundred additional children will be able to participate in the Anthony Bean Community Theatre Summer Program free of charge because of a grant provided by the Louisiana Family Recovery Corps.

Most of the summer camps in the Greater New Orleans area ended last week, and while homeroom bells were ringing at some schools Monday, and some private schools started today, the vast majority of New Orleans schools will not open until after Labor Day. To help fill the gap, the Anthony Bean Community Theatre (ABCT) has agreed to remain open until the start of school and broaden the program to serve 100 additional children. The Recovery Corps has agreed to cover the costs.

Anthony Bean Community Theatre was one of several programs in the state receiving grant dollars from the Recovery Corps to serve children impacted by the Hurricanes. Through partnerships with the American Red Cross and the Office of Youth Development, the Recovery Corps was able to facilitate $5,000,000 in funding to quality summer programs in 26 parishes across the state.

The 100 available spaces are expected to fill up quickly. Auditions are being held everyday this week from 9:00 am until 5:00pm for children ages 8-16 interested in attending the camp. To audition, just stop by the theatre located at 1333 South Carrollton or call 504-862-7529.

The Louisiana Family Recovery Corps is a private nonprofit organization established to connect families impacted by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita with the resources they need to get back on their feet, return home and establish a quality life.
